With 71 of its institutes included in the Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings 2022, India is the third most-represented country, up from 63 last year. The top-ranked Indian institute is the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, which is rated 42nd, down three places from previous year’s 37th position.

In addition to IISc, India has three additional top 100 institutes. JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research, situated in Mysore, debuts in 65th place, followed by IIT Ropar (=68) and IIT Indore (=87). In the top 200 universities, there are 17 Indian institutions, down from 18 the previous year. Eight of the 14 that were rated in both years have improved.

IIT Gandhinagar, Alagappa University, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Saveetha University, Mahatma Gandhi University, Delhi Technological University, Banaras Hindu University, Institute of Chemical Technology, Jamia Millia Islamia, Jawaharlal Nehru University, International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad, Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, Delhi, and Panjab University are among the top 200 universities in the country.
The seven first-generation Indian Institutes of Technology, including Delhi, Bombay, Kharagpur, and Madras, remain off the list since they decided not to participate in the global rankings in 2020, claiming data discrepancies and lack of openness as reasons.
