The University Grants Commission (UGC) revealed a list of universities that they have labeled “fake” before the start of the academic year, as they do every year. Twenty universities that are not permitted to provide any degrees are on the list this year. Delhi has the most of these institutions—eight—of any city. “A number of schools are issuing degrees in violation of the requirements of the UGC Act, the UGC has learned. Degrees conferred by such institutions are not recognised nor acknowledged for use in further education or the workforce. According to UGC Secretary Manish Joshi, these universities are not permitted to provide any degrees.

All India Institute of Public and Physical Health Sciences, Commercial University Ltd, Daryaganj, United Nations University, Vocational University, ADR-Centric Juridical University, Indian Institution of Science and Engineering, Viswakarma Open University for Self-Employment, and Adhyatmik Vishwavidyalaya (Spiritual University) are the eight “fake” universities that the UGC claims are present in Delhi. These universities can be found in Uttar Pradesh at the Gandhi Hindi Vidyapith, the National University of Electro Complex Homoeopathy, the Open University of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, and the Bhartiya Shiksha Parishad. According to the UGC, there are “fake” universities in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, and Kerala as well.

The complete list is available on the official website of the UGC– ugc.gov.in.
