IIT Madras NPTEL: Over 200 Technical Courses Translated into Indian Regional Languages

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) NPTEL has translated 207 technical courses to regional languages. The IIT Madras NPTEL has also translated the ‘highly sought-after courses’ like ‘Introduction to Internet of Things’. To ensure the accuracy and quality of translations, NPTEL has a team of 1,029 Hindi translators and 139 quality controllers (QCs).

The institute said in a statement that NPTEL has expanded access to educational resources in Hindi by publishing 199 e-books in the language on its website. For Hindi-speaking learners, an additional 1,200 hours of video content in the form of audio recordings are accessible to enhance their learning experience.

NPTEL has prioritized important fields, including computer science (35 courses), social sciences (32 courses), and electrical engineering (29 courses), according to a statement from IIT Madras.

“The Joy of Computing using Python” and other courses have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from course participants, according to NPTEL. It also stated that efforts are being made to expand the translation efforts, with courses like “Introduction to Machine Learning” being translated into Hindi using machine learning tools and voiceovers for improved accessibility.

Eleven languages, including Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, and Telugu, have been translated into NPTEL courses thus far. The goal is to support students who finished their education in a regional language and are switching to technical education in English.

The Ministry of Education (MoE) of the Government of India funds the joint initiative of the IITs and IISc, known as NPTEL (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning), which was introduced in 2003. Originally founded as a project to bring high-quality education to every corner of the nation, NPTEL currently provides working professionals and students throughout India with hundreds of courses for certification each semester.
