Over the last five years, the NIRF Rankings for the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Durgapur have not remained stable. The ranking of the institute dwindled with time. It also failed to secure a rank in the QS World University Rankings and the Times Higher Education (THE) in 2024.

NIT Durgapur, which was founded in 1960, came in at number 43 in the most recent NIRF rating, down 10 spots from the previous 34 in the engineering colleges category. Nevertheless, the technological institute’s standing has improved since 2020.

Based on the institute’s performance under the India rankings, it has shown some improvement since 2020. The institute rose from a rank of 96 in 2020 to 71 in 2021 as a consequence of improvements made on a number of factors. The Durgapur-based institute has only seen a drop in its overall rating when compared to the 2021 ranking. The institute scored 72 in 2022—a one-point decrease from the year before—but 90 in 2023. a drop of eighteen points.

The institute achieved a ranking this year that was closer to his 2019 ranking of 93. In the engineering category for 2023, the institute received scores of 63.94, 41.32, 74.22, 55.80, and 19.10 out of a possible 100 for teaching, learning, and resources; in research and professional practice, graduation outcomes (GO), and outreach and inclusivity, the institute received 41.32 and 19.10 respectively.

The school is still regarded as elite by students, who enroll in large numbers to pursue programs including MBA, MTech, BTech, MSc, and MCA. Additionally, it grants PhDs in a range of science and engineering fields.

Formerly known as Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs), NIT Durgapur was granted the status of deemed university at that time. It was designated as an Institute of National Importance in 2007.

The Department of Higher Education within the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Government of India provides financial support to NIT Durgapur, which is an autonomous institution.
