International students who want to study in Germany must have a blocked account, which means that the money they deposit cannot be withdrawn until they arrive in Germany.

Accounts can be opened in German banks or online before students arrive at their destination, and the process typically takes about a week with the proper papers.

A certain amount has always been required in the blocked account as part of the study planning and visa application process for non-EU students.

According to the country’s government website for overseas students, Study in Germany, starting in January 2023, €11,208 euros in the blocked account was required when applying for a visa to study in the country.

The website has been modified to reflect that the price has increased to €11,904 beginning with the winter semester of the 2024/2025 academic year, representing a €700 increase.

However, DAAD, the German academic exchange service, did not confirm this when contacted for confirmation.

Representatives from the organization stated that, while the projected increase was not on their radar, they would “not be surprised if there were” increases in the proof of funding amount given the “general increase in cost of living”.

Ultimately, they stated, the decision is up to German authorities.

Germany as a destination has been under scrutiny as reports indicate that the Big Four study destinations – the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, and Canada – have witnessed a drop in applications due to various difficulties with rhetoric and regulations.

Indian students are particularly interested in Germany, for example, as the government strives to make its labor market more appealing to international students from India.
