UK’s University of Southampton to Set up Campus in India
The UK’s University of Southampton became the first UK university to be granted a licence by the Indian government to establish a comprehensive campus in the country.
As a part of the UGC’s initiative of inviting top 500 foreign universities to establish their campuses in India, UK’s University of Southampton, which is known as a global top 100 university, has been invited to establish a campus in India.
Only two Australian universities have opened branch campuses in India thus far, at Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City): Deakin University and the University of Wollongong. Furthermore, Malaysia’s Lincoln institution College made history by being the first foreign institution to apply for a campus establishment in India via the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) special application platform.
According to the varsity, they have been operating in India for over 50 years and have forged meaningful, mutually beneficial relationships. The University of Southampton will be able to strengthen these ties with the new campus by increasing research cooperation and impact, expanding teaching partnerships, facilitating two-way staff and student mobility, and guaranteeing local civic and community involvement.
In collaboration with other colleges, businesses, and the government, this new campus will conduct research and share information, using the findings to create practical social and economic effects that will foster an inventive and enterprising nation.
“No university in the twenty-first century can be genuinely global without interacting with India.By combining Southampton’s world-class initiatives in education, research, knowledge exchange, and enterprise with all the talent of the emerging global superpower, India, we hope to create a campus that will benefit both the university and India socially and economically, according to Mark E. Smith, president and vice chancellor of Southampton University.
He went on, “The University of Southampton will contribute to realising a crucial component of the Government of India’s transformative agenda through this new campus, playing our part in harnessing the potential, talent, and capabilities of Indian youth.”
“University of Southampton Delhi NCR will be the first comprehensive international campus in India,” declared Professor Andrew Atherton, Vice-President for International and Engagement. It would encourage scholarly cooperation and provide the Indian higher education system a global perspective, creating chances to pursue top 100 degrees domestically.
