Olympiads will be used by the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) to admit students to its BTech and BS programs. Beginning with the 2025–2026 academic year, admission to IIT Kanpur’s BTech–BS programs will be made through Olympiads in five departments.

Olympiads will be used to admit applicants to the departments of chemistry, economics, computer science and engineering, biological sciences and bioengineering, mathematics, and statistics.

According to a statement from IIT Kanpur, there are two steps in the selection process. In order to create a shortlist of candidates, each department will first evaluate applicants according to their Olympiad rankings. Following that, these applicants will take part in a compulsory written test and, if necessary, an interview.

To guarantee that the admissions procedure is efficient and that all open seats within each department are filled without overlap, a selection committee at the Institute level, headed by the Dean of Academic Affairs, will compile the suggestions from each department.

Olympiads in biology, physics, chemistry, and mathematics will determine admission to the biological sciences and bioengineering departments. Olympiads in mathematics and informatics will be used to determine admission to the departments of computer science and engineering. The Olympiad in Chemistry will determine admission to the Chemistry department, while the Olympiad in Mathematics will determine admission to the Economics, Mathematics, and Statistics departments.

IIT Kanpur admission through Olympiad: Common eligibility criteria

1. The candidate’s specified age restriction must match that of the JEE Advanced candidates for the same year.

2. The candidate must have taken the Class 12 or equivalent test for the first time in the year they were admitted to IIT Kanpur or the year before, with math, physics, and chemistry as required courses.

3. The applicant must have received a first-class grade on the qualifying test.

4. Regardless of whether the candidate stayed in the program or accepted a seat at IIT by reporting online or in person at the reporting center in the past, the candidate should not have been admitted to an IIT through JoSAA in the previous year.

5. Candidates who had their admission to an IIT revoked for any reason after enrolling in an IIT are not eligible to be admitted through Olympiads.

6. The applicant ought to have participated in the International Olympic Training Camp in the field designated by the relevant agency.

To finalize the program’s chosen candidates, the participating departments will shortlist the candidates based on the rank list of the relevant Olympiad. They will then administer a written test (which is required) and an interview (which is optional) to the shortlisted individuals.
