IGNOU Announces Certificate Programme in Healthcare-Waste Management in Collaboration with WHO

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), South-East Asia Region, has launched a Certificate in Health Care Waste Management (CHCWM). The programme aims to strengthen public health systems and environmental safety by building professional capacity for safe and effective handling of biomedical waste.
In accordance with the MoU with the Odisha government, IGNOU will provide all academic programs in Odia.
IGNOU’s CHCWM program aims to address the environmental and health risks associated with inappropriate disposal of medical waste. It is intended for professionals and paraprofessionals who work in waste management services, hospitals, primary health centers, and municipal sanitation agencies.
The course material complies with WHO’s international recommendations for managing healthcare waste as well as India’s Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules, 2016 (as amended in 2018 and 2019).
The different kinds of healthcare waste and their effects on environmental and public health will be explained to the participants. With an emphasis on real-world application, the curriculum also offers comprehensive coverage of infection control standards, regulatory frameworks, and best practices unique to a given location.
Course structure
The program has a minimum duration of six months and a maximum completion term of two years. Students can enroll in either the July–December or January–June admission periods. Successfully completing Class 12 or an equivalent qualification is the eligibility requirement.
A mixed learning method is used in the CHCWM program. Students can view instructional videos, engage in Q&A forums, participate in live web conferences, and use a specialized online platform for learning help in addition to receiving Self-Instructional Materials (SIMs).
Along with theory-based modules, the curriculum gives students the option to pick between a workshop and a project. Assignments turned in and a term-end test serve as the basis for assessment.
How to apply via Samarth?
